Student Spotlight: Sophie’s Momentum Experience
To understand what Momentum truly offers, we spoke with Sophie, a senior who has grown from a freshman exploring her interests into a confident consultant. She joined momentum 4 years ago as a freshman and has stuck with it growing in her skills as both an individual consultant and team member to the momentum student team.
Q: What initially drew you to join Momentum as a freshman?
Sophie: “I learned about it through a friend, and at the time I was actually thinking about switching my major but didn’t know what to choose. Momentum was offering real-life work experience with real clients, especially in social media and marketing. My skills were more graphic design-focused, so I thought, ‘Why not apply those here?’ It ended up being the perfect fit.”
Q: Can you describe your first project and what you learned from it?
Sophie: “I worked with a client called American Dito, a small Mexican snack shop on Fulton. We helped them learn how to use social media to market their business, improve their signage, and really get started in their entrepreneurial journey. It was exciting to see how our work could make a real impact.”
Q: How have your role and responsibilities evolved from freshman year to now?
Sophie: “The more I took on client work and built skills outside of class, the more dynamic my role became. I had more diverse opportunities and learned to stay self-motivated since a lot of the work happens on your own time. Working with real clients who have real goals pushes you to grow, and those experiences lead to even more opportunities and connections.”
Q: How does working with clients differ from typical classroom work?
Sophie: “It honestly teaches you more soft skills than hard skills. You still gain technical experience, but you really learn how to communicate, how to work with different types of people, and how to be an effective and efficient consultant. Those are skills you can’t fully learn in a classroom.”
Q: Have you taken on any leadership or mentoring roles?
Sophie: “Yes, I’ve been part of a mentorship program where I worked with mentees. One of the biggest things I’ve learned from Momentum is that leadership isn’t about being authoritative—it’s about being open-minded, asking questions, and having confidence. That mindset has carried over into other areas of my life.”
Q: Looking back, what’s something you wish you knew as a freshman?
Sophie: “That it’s okay to not have everything figured out. You don’t need to have your whole career planned, even as a senior. Your career is a lifelong journey, and things will change. Just stay open-minded, take opportunities, and follow what genuinely interests you instead of what just sounds good.”
Q: What advice would you give to a student considering joining Momentum?
Sophie: “Do it. It might sound intimidating to work with real clients, but that’s where the growth happens. It’s not as scary as it seems, and pushing yourself outside your comfort zone is the best way to learn.”
